Preston Dragons is a community club run by a group of volunteers as a not for profit club based at Preston Marina. We work in close partnership with the Marina and are very fortunate to have access to the facilities they provide.
Please note the following important information.
The Tuesday evening group will meet in The Beach Hut Coffee Shop, in the marina main building by 6.00pm, the session will last until approx. 8.15 pm. This is the main training session for the club.
Most Saturdays we meet at 10 am – this session is confirmed via our whatsapp group on a weekly basis as we do not always have a coach available for this one.
Full members are guaranteed a place every week and will always be given priority. Ad hoc members are those who £5 pay as they paddle. The first paddle is free. If you then fancy joining our club, please ask the coach or marina staff for details or see our website or Facebook page.
The club is lucky to have two very experienced coaches one of whom has paddled for team G.B. We are in the process of training more coaches and helms.
The full postal address of Preston Marina is: Preston Marina, Navigation Way, Ashton, Preston, PR2 2YP.
Easy parking is available right outside the Marina building.
Refreshments – on a Tuesday evening the Coffee Shop is closed but if anyone requires sandwiches or cold food from the menu this can be ordered in advance and ready for you at 6pm. Most Tuesday evenings drinks are available after the paddle. At the weekends the Coffee Shop is open.
Suitable clothing – you will need to be suitably dressed for the weather conditions of the day. It is often much cooler out on the water but once we get paddling things do warm up! In colder conditions the 3 layer system is recommended – this is a thin man-made base layer with a man-made middle layer (several thin layers are better than one thick layer) and then the outer layer should be a waterproof, windproof jacket and trousers –a light weight walking cagoule and over trouser are ideal. Trainers are appropriate but be aware that feet can get wet due to small amounts of water in the bottom of the boat.
You may also need a bottle of water.
Sunscreen – in the unlikely event of a hot summers day don’t forget your sunscreen and a hat!
Buoyancy aids must be worn by all Preston Dragon members and are provided by the club. Paddles are also provided by the club. Both items must be returned to the store room at the end of the session.
The Club has t-shirts, hoodie tops and buoyancy aids which are available to buy. Waterproof jackets and IDBF approved paddles can also be purchased, speak to one of our committee members for details.
Membership entitlement – attend training sessions, represent the club at races/events, undertake a position within the club and qualify to be a coach/helm. The club will pay for these as long as members are contributing to the club coaching.
The club needs members to work together and help with the general running of the club. There are tasks such as bailing the boats when it has been raining, cleaning the boats (inside and out), arranging fund raising events and any other job which crops up!
The club has a constitution, policies and all these are available on request.
The club is fortunate to have secured funding for its Dragon Boats through a partnership with the University of Central Lancashire’s Confucius Society, in addition to a generous grant from Sport England.
Whilst there is a racing element to the club (we enter the BDA events nationally) the club ethos is that all members should be enjoying the activity (yes, even in the cold winter sessions!).
